Automotive industry to use SENSORIS vehicle-to-cloud data standard with Ko-HAF project

ERTICO – ITS Europe and Continental Automotive announced a strategic agreement between SENSORIS, the global standard for vehicle-to-cloud data format, and Ko-HAF, the German-funded project for cooperative highly automated driving.

For SENSORIS, the strategic agreement states that the next step is to create a global industry standard for the format of data exchanged between the vehicle and cloud that is based on the open-sourcedata specification published by HERE Technologies. Having a publicly funded project actively engaging in the standardization work and agreeing on using and testing the specification gives SENSORIS the opportunity to see their specification in action and incorporate real scenario contributions into the standardization process. SENSORIS chairman Prokop Jehlicka (HERE Technologies) states: “Having a standard for howvehicle sensor data is exchanged is an important step forward for the automotive industry,as vehicle connectivity and automation rapidly increase. It is critical now for the mass adoption of the standard, and the fact that a handful of companies in the Ko-HAF project are also members of SENSORIS results in the perfect match of collaboration between these two bodies.”

The German publicly funded project Ko-HAF, is introducing the full ecosystem for highly automated driving. It is very important to have normalized and consistent information being transported between the vehicle and their Safety Server;only with perfect understanding of transported data, the quality of the gathered information and the resulting safety of highly automatedvehicles can be guaranteed. Therefore, Ko-HAF has embracedalong-term usage of the specification published by HERE Technologiesand has updated it according to the needs of the highly automated driving ecosystem.

Moreover, participants in both the SENSORIS platform and Ko-HAF project took the identified changes from the Sensors Data Ingestion Interface and brought them as requirements towards the SENSORIS work. This allows SENSORIS to grow towards a ready-to-use specification for highly automated driving.

About ERTICO – ITS Europe

ERTICO – ITS Europe is a multi-sector, public/private partnership pursuing the development and deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS). We connect public authorities, industry players, infrastructure operators, users, national ITS associations and other organisations together and work to bring “Intelligence into Mobility”.

The ERTICO work programme focuses on initiatives to improve road safety, security and network efficiency whilst considering measures to reduce environmental impact. Our vision is of a future transport system working towards zero accidents, zero delays and fully informed people, where services are affordable and seamless, the environment is protected, privacy is respected, and security is provided.

ERTICO is also coordinating the ADASIS Forum (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Interface Specifications), a platform that defines a dedicated interface using the ADAS Horizon for exchanging information between the in-vehicle map database, ADAS and automated driving applications enabling predictive vehicle applications to reduce fuel consumption or increase safety.

About Ko-HAF

Ko-HAF aims at highly automated driving with higher speeds: drivers no longer have to monitor such systems permanently. They can devote themselves to other tasks but must be able to take over the control on demand with a certain reserve of time. For this purpose, the foresight of the vehicle must go further than is possible with its own sensors. This is where Ko-HAF comes in: Vehicles send their surrounding information via mobile radio to the so-called Safety Server. There they are collected and merged, so that the vehicles then have a highly accurate current map available, which provides the required higher forecast in the sense of an artificial horizon. Main outcome of Ko-HAF will be:

  • Collective perception by means of a communication among the vehicles and the Safety Server (back-end) -> extended perception of the environment
  • Collection of data in the vehicle including auto-localisation and interaction with the Safety Server
  • Gapless transition between normal operation and active safety functions and between different automation levels
  • Transfer into the safe state (emergency operation), e.g. in case of a driver blackout (no reaction to the take-over command)
  • Experimental joint trial testing of the HAD functions on highways in mixed public traffic

About SENSORIS

SENSORIS, initiated by HERE in June 2015 and coordinated by ERTICO since June 2016,focuses on the specification and world-wide standardization of a vehicle-based sensor data exchange format for the vehicle-to-cloud and cloud-to-cloud interfaces. The goal of SENSORIS is a unified exchange format to allow Service and Map providers to use vehicle-based Sensor Data without the need of transformation between different manufacturer depending formats and the danger of data loss through translation.
To date, 28 major automotive and supplier companies have already joined the SENSORIS Innovation Platform and are effectively working towards the first release of the standardised specifications. SENSORIS focuses on a broad domain of participants being:

  • Vehicle manufacturers
  • Navigation System Suppliers
  • Sensor & Component Manufacturers
  • ADAS manufacturers
  • Location content & Service providers
  • Telecom & Cloud Infrastructure Providers

The core Use Cases of SENSORIS are the transportation of:

  • Near Real Time Sensor Information for e.g. Hazard Warnings and Driver Information
  • Delayed Batch Sensor Information for e.g. Map Learning
  • Delayed statistical Aggregation of Sensor Information for e.g. Driver Behaviour Information.
